After Henri showed us those 3 droppers for black, mid-point and white on the levels tool, I was curious to see if they were also in GIMP. The answer is yes, they are. I experimented a bit with them, using the ravens photo. I used the black point dropper on various parts of the background and got some interesting results. Here is the one I like the best. Good learnings for future use!

Back in November we headed out to our favorite parameter walk at the River Bend golf course and the birds are such a delight. The challenges are fast moving birds, filtered sunlight through the tall pine trees and many bum shots. This is a black capped chickadee enjoying a sunflower seed snack. I had my 300 mm lens, at F5.6 ISO 2000 and 1/2000 sec. I use my TV or AV settings for most of my birding photography.

I tried some of the editing techniques for winter photography on a photo that I took in 2020. This photo of a white-tailed deer was taken in Bebo Grove (Fish Creek Park).
AP f/3.5, s 1/2000 sec, ISO 200, FL 165 mm, Spot metering.
Edited in Photoshop. Cropped. Selected the deer, lightened the shadows and increased the saturation. No edits to the background.

No luck finding snowy owls this winter, but north east of Calgary some wonderful prairie vistas and as the sun sets a great light show plays out.
Feb 2/23 at 5pm (searching the tops of poles and fences for owls).

A comparison of a picture I took for the High Key Challenge and the same picture when I used the white eye dropper under Levels in Photoshop Elements on the snow. Henri, thanks for showing that to me!!

More winter landscape than wildlife but it looked so serene in the early morning light.
Shot with my 70-300 mm lens at F/13, 1/320 sec, ISO 250
