2024-03-12 SOOC

SOOC means Straight Out Of the Camera. The idea is to think about your main camera controls before you take a picture. This is preferably done in Manual Mode where you set the Aperture, Shutter Speed ,ISO and White Balance yourself while paying attention to the light metering. It also involves thinking about the quality of light on your subject, such as natural contrast, colour or other factors that make a good picture without post processing. The objective of this challenge is to do minimal Post Processing (Just straightening and cropping plus size reduction to 1600 pixels wide for landscape images or 1050 pixels high for vertical images)

Ruby our 12 year old Labradoodle lost her right eye to glaucoma 3 years ago and we have been using drops to prevent it occurring in her remaining eye ever since. She is so smart, when she sees me with the camping light on my head she immediately goes to this chair since it has proven most convenient and allows me to hold her head up and pull her lid back to expose the sclera surface so almost all the liquid stays between the lid and the surface of the eyeball. This ritual happens twice a day.
Set the camera back to 12 mg, jpg only. Settings were f. 11, ss 1/80, ISO 400 with camp light and a bounced fill flash to provide some depth in an almost completely darkened room. Used the 10 second delay to allow time for posing. Opened in Preview on a Mac and cropped about 20 % of left side to minimize the balding head distracting from the subject.

In regards to white balance, there’s very little daylight left coming in a window camera left, and both the fill flash and headlamp come close to daylight at about 5500 k so WB was left at daylight setting.
Also, the camera had a 50 mm ( 80 mm full frame equivalent ) lens and was on a tripod set to maximum height, about 2.1 m

Great action shot Bill! Tells a story of companionship and trust very effectively.

Artsy Windbreak? Calgary Zoo. Straight out of the camera. Just cropped to fill the frame. 1/1000 sec, f/8, ISO 500 Auto White Balance. Just watched the light meter to slightly under expose to compensate for the bright sky.

This is an interesting image because it’s pleasing to look at and makes the viewer think – what the heck is it? The parallel wires add another pattern.

Out of the camera at f/7.1, 1/100 se., ISO 200

Another SOOC image from my Zoo trip. I tried to expose for the wood, which over exposed the background significantly. In Photographers Choice I have used post processing to “correct” this image.

We took a trip out to the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary just west of Cochrane on Sunday, March 17 to spend some time learning about the wolfdogs. The weather was just perfect and the light shining through the trees on Loki was just right with a little splash of sun on her nose. Shot in AP, F8, S 1/2000, ISO 2500, Auto WB, Matrix Metering. Nothing done to change the photo: SOOC

We were in Paris last week at the end of our vacation. This shot is taken from the top of the Eiffel tower. Pont d’Iena over the Seine in the foreground, Trocadero Gardens and Palais de Chaillot in the middle and the towers of modern Paris in the distance. Lots of leading lines to take you from the foreground deep into the photo.
Shot in Manual, f/3.5, 1/1250 sec, ISO 160, 28 mm fl, Auto white balance, Multi-pattern metering.

  9. Nick says:

Out of the camera – as shot f/11; 1/15 sec.; ISO 100

Second picture from Yamnuska March 17/24. Lighting was perfect. I really liked the dappling of the light through the trees. Cropped to focus on the wolfdog. Settings in AP: F8, S 1/2000, ISO 2500, Auto WB, Matrix Metering, FL 400mm

On Mar 20th with the snow arriving I ventured into Valour Park at 3:15pm.
Tripod in hand and an 80mm prime lens on my Fuji XT-5. The first image in light snow is looking set down Victoria Cross Blvd. Shot in camera jpeg (full manual) in Advanced Filter Partial Blue setting to highlight the blue flags. Original jpeg file size of 21MB.
    ISO 100/ F10/ SS@1/125sec/
Image exactly as captured (no cropping enhancing or tweaking).

Aliens on North Glenmore park. I would normally remove the lower spy glass on the right.

  14. tony campos says:

The same object with a different position. I like it better but now the light comes from the back and I would need to correct for it…and also remove the supporting bracket.

    • Bill Stilwell says:

We look forward to you using your processing skills to make the aliens “come alive” and posting on the photographer’s choice.

Since spring has not sprung, and I was tired of snow pictures. While watering my plants today, I came across this 3/4 inch doll in my jade plant. My grandson had placed a few of these in the living room and they change location every time he comes over. I only cropped the image. Taken with my Macro lens, F5/6, 1/400 and ISO set at 1250.

Snowshoeing on Nose Hill yesterday. SOOC except for slight cropping on the bottom and right side. ISO 125, f/18, 1/60.

  17. Ron says:

Another snowshoeing shot — a little on the dark side, but perhaps could be considered a moody shot? I will post an edited version in Photographer’s Choice. ISO 100, f/14, 1/250.

SOOC shot of icicles that formed during the last few thaws. Love the ripples and textures in the ice. Shot at f/4, 1/6400 sec, ISO 250

  22. Frankie Thornhill says:

The sky was so bright I had to adjust the exposure a few times to get the pigeons to show up. I still would have edited to make the lighting not so flat looking. It was a real lesson to not be allowed to edit!
    ISO 800, 40 mm, f/6.3, 1/2500
