Here is an opportunity to photograph horses in action as well as the pageantry around these events, such as marching bands, parading horses, classic cars etc. This Thursday seniors 65+ get in free. The gates open at 9:00 am. Please upload images no larger than 1600 pixels wide or 1050 pixels high.
The actual visit on Thursday July 4, was a bit disappointing. I had expected more hoopla with displays of classic cars, flowers, marching bands etc. The competition this morning was far off in a corner, and hard to get at. I will try this Field Trip again for the “Masters” in September.
To simulate extreme “action”, I tried panning with slow shutter speed to get some motion blur while still getting decent definition of horse and rider. I had to use my Neutral Density 8 stop filter to get slow enough shutter speed at reasonable aperture
and ISO settings. 1/30 sec, f/7.1, ISO 200
Similar shot, different horse and rider.

I couldn’t go on Thursday so I went on Wednesday. It was very quiet day. 1/1000 f5 ISO 280 155mm
I went on Wednesday as I had an appointment on Thursday . It was very quiet and threatening to rain.

Great “frozen action” image Della. The muscle definition in the horses shoulders and front legs are great.
I really like how you have captured the concentration of the rider. I took the liberty of cleaning up the tree around his head and cropping the image a bit differently.
thank you , Henri.
the jump ISO 280 f5 1/1000 155mm
Here is another rendition of my “dynamic” blur images that have the rider and horse facial features somewhat sharp. 1/40 sec, f 4.5, ISO 200 taken trough an 8 stop neutral density filter. These are few and far between, and it take skillful panning on a monopod to get a decent image.
I was there on Thursday and met Robert.
Here are some shots.

I went to Spruce Meadows on Saturday – really quiet that day. Head shot of a horse using a Canon EOS R8.
Spruce Meadows on Saturday. Shot of a horse in a nice canter using a Canon EOS R8.
My day at Spruce Meadows didn’t produce any slick unforgettable photos……
However I did get this one, which lets you know we were at Spruce M
