Six of us showed up at Glenbow Ranch last evening to witness the promised strong Aurora Borealis. Grant’s app promised an Aurora strength of Kp 6 within the hour, only to be disappointed by clouds moving in. Nevertheless we practiced camera control in the dark or by dim red lights. We got some images of star fields and tree silhouettes. So this page is for posting non-aurora images.
Please keep images at 1600 pixels wide or 1050 pixels high.
Tree silhouettes against Calgary’s light pollution. Taken from the parking lot at Glenbow Ranch. Enhanced in Photoshop Camera Raw using the exposure, contrast, shadows and whites sliders. Then used noise reduction also in Camera Raw. 3 sec, f/4, ISO 6400.
Using AI to remove distraction in right bottom corner.
Using perspective crop to minimize the lens distortion, as in straighten the trees out and even the horizon out.
Here is an interesting cloud formation lit by Calgary light pollution. Same exposure and Photoshop processing as the image above.
I do not have any good photo from this outing
thank you Henri for organizing the outing and helping me with my focusing in night photography.
Finally got to see some Northern Lights while walking the dog tonight (Oct 7 8:30 pm). Went back around 9 pm and took this shot from the lookout platform in Silver Springs. This is looking directly west. You can see the light pollution from Cochrane. 4 sec exposure at f/4 and ISO 3200. Processed in Photoshop Camera Raw using multiple sliders and denoise.
Here is a more spectacular set of Aurora streaks looking west towards Calgary’s downtown. Again multiple slider adjustments and de-noise in Photoshop Camera Raw.
Nick is unable to attend today, and send me his images of the aurora taken last night (Oct 7) Below a few of Nick’s images.
