2025-07-01 Abstract

This challenge is about finding abstract shapes and making them prominent in your images. One example would be to find letters in natural shapes, or you can try to find pure shapes such as curves, circles, squares, s-curves, repeating lines/patterns etc. An additional idea is to selectively enhance these shapes through software editing techniques such as “burning” or “dodging” or adding colour selectively with a paintbrush wash. Another method would be using one of the many filters available in one of the many software packages on the internet. Yet another method to create abstract images is to use ICM (Intentional Camera Movement)

There are many resources for this type of photography on the internet. Try Image Searches on Google, Bing or Firefox. Other sources for inspiration: Pixabay, YouPic, Unsplash, Viewbug, and many more.

This was a fun abstract, a closeup of a garbage bin by the parking lot at the entrance to Dale Hodges park. Shot at ISO 720, 120mm, f/11, 1/800. Cropped and rotated, adjusted exposure, denoise and sharpened.

    water reflections at Griffith wood.
used one of the presets in Lightroom to change the colour a little and pushed vibrance and exposure up

Increase to exposure time to 4 seconds with help of ND filter and increased exposure and vibrance

Very interesting contrasting hard geometric and soft leaf patterns, not to mention the black and white dots pulling it all together.

    • Henri says:

Really effective! I love how the raindrops change from white to black depending on the background. Love the balance, geometric versus natural leaf shadows.

  6. Ron says:

More raindrops on windowpane. ISO 3200 f/5.6,1/2500

Minor post processing with tone and colour added in On1.

This was taken through the windshield. I liked it because of the simplicity and the triangle of light images that create interest in a very basic way in an almost throw away photo.
    f5.6@1.6s, iso 200, 80 mm.
