There are 250-300 cruise ships navigating the Nile at any given time on the 220 km route between Luxor and Aswan. For a seven-night cruise, you fly from Cairo to either city, then sail from one city to the other and back again, stopping at different spots on each leg. About 120 people on our ship. Some days were hazy due to burning in the fields, trapped pollution and fine sand blowing off the Sahara. Some days were clear. This shot reminds me of a fleet of Borg ships on Star Trek.

This past weekend was the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s Big Backyard BioBlitz. The goal was to get out, observe and document different species. This is a Yellow-fronted Bumble Bee. A native Alberta species. It was on the Oregano flowers in my backyard.

An Indian pangolin. The second time in my life that I’ve had an opportunity to see one. These mammals are endangered and they are the most trafficked animal in the world.

This is a Barasingha or Swamp deer. They are endangered. In the 1970s there were only 66 left but with conservation efforts they now number about 1,000.

This was one of the most surprising pictures that I took in Oslo. Known as “Stolpersteine”, or “stumbling stones”, there are now more than 70,000 such memorial blocks laid in more than 1,200 cities and towns across Europe and Russia. Each commemorates a victim outside their last-known freely chosen residence.
The inscription on each stone begins “Here lived”, followed by the victim’s name, date of birth, and fate: internment, suicide, exile or, in the vast majority of cases, deportation and murder. Taken with my phone. I never thought that I would see one in Oslo.
