2025-06-03 Early Summer

With the summer starting I thought a more general challenge theme would be appropriate. For inspiration click here.

Here are the links to the two presentations I showed last Tuesday. On composition using Steve McCurry’s work and Joel Meyerowitz’s work

Had a beautiful late spring early summer walk in the Zoo today. The gorillas were out in their playpen garden. Two year old Okabe was having fun on top of one of the logs. I shot this with a 100 mm macro lens f/2.8, 1/500 sec, ISO 125. Used the regular contrast and shadows sliders and then enhanced sharpness, texture, Cropped quite a bit and removed some distractions with AI.

I was golfing (Valley 9) so only had my iPhone. Beautiful day with no wind at all so I got a perfect reflection in one of the ponds. Not much processing needed, just made it a bit darker and cropped out a floating stick in one corner that ruined the effect after I got the brainwave to turn it upside down.

Lovely shot – fill the frame composition. The brown-yellow down shows of well against the out-of-focus background. I really like the curious expression.

  4. Henri says:

I found this almost perfectly symmetrical dandylion on our walk in Griffith Woods. Taken with a 100 mm macro lens at f/2.8 for minimum depth of field. Processed in Photoshop and sharpened (at 100%) with Topaz.

    • Bill says:

Great image Henri. I like the near perfection but the missing bit just to the left go 12:00 o’clock let’s the viewer know it is real. You dealt with the shallow DoF well with all the background not sharp but almost tack sharp on the dandelion.
For the rest of us can you tell us any of the following dimensions:

      Lens to subject.
Subject to closest background or lens to closest background?

    Great photos this challenge!
I went to the reservoir on a smoky Saturday. Lots of action surrounding the kids learning how to right a turtled sailboat in the freezing water.

From what I remember, this isn’t allowed under The Glenmore Park Bylaw 9018. “16. (1) (2) (3) No person shall enter the waters of the Glenmore Reservoir for any purpose whatsoever.”

      • Frankie says:

Yes you’re right! And to the left of where I was standing, a group of 15 kids were frolicking in the water!

  8. Paul Fesko says:

Nice weather on June 8, drew some big crowds to float on the lake at Carburn Park.

Boy and kite in Confederation Park. Taken with iPhone camera. Removed a few distractions along the horizon line.

  11. Ron says:

removed white triangle (butterfly maybe?) in bottom right corner.

    • Henri says:

Nice example of summer fun. I like how the image is divided in three bands. The kite is fully inside the top band and the kid is nicely silhouetted against the bright grass.

I decided that it was time to check out the wild flowers on Nose Hill Park and I was not disappointed. There are lots no matter what entrance you use. This is a picture of lupines with a Digger Bee gathering pollen. He wasn’t bothered by me or my camera. FL 240, F 6.5, S 1/1000, ISO 320, Auto WB and Matrix Metering.

Got a new phone and trying out the macro settings. I can only say wow. A poppy, maybe.
