This challenge is about creating images of human habitation and specifically streets. These images do not necessarily have to have “humans” in it, but can have some aspect of human habitation. For example it could be an artful image of a discarded paper cup lying near a storm drain. Of course it could also be an image of people interacting or not interacting in a street scene. Use your composition skills to come up with a pleasing image.
For inspiration have a look at Vivian Maier’s work. If you have an Amazon Prime subscription search for “Finding Vivian Maier” a one hour documentary on the discovery of her work and some insight on who she was. For some deeper insight into another street photographers reasoning have a look at this Crit House video interview of Gus Powell.
I went to the Kensington Pup Crawl on October 26 for this assignment. Hundreds of dogs! I got over 60 cute photos of dogs in costumes, but this one stood out because of the people.
ISO 400, 30 mm, f/8, 1/200 s
Love this shot Frankie! Especially the expressions of the people. What a happy bunch. Dog ownership is good for you!
What a happy scene………..tells a wonderful story.
I went roaming around Stephen avenue and environs for this assignment. The photo appears to show an oncoming interaction between officers and a civilian. It tells a false story. I followed these three officers (as unobtrusively as I could) camera ready wanting to capture a photo with an interesting background and more importantly no other people in the frame. But that last individual in the background hung around, moving slowly and apparently well aware of the oncoming officers. In the end the officers walked right past the person. But that is not what it looks like is about to happen
F/8; 1/160 sec; ISO 400
Great shot nick. Good composition of elements of three. The implied body language seems to indicate a confrontation. I like the angular shapes of the background contrasting with the body shapes.
I got some interesting shots of people in the Central Library, but I have chosen this one to post. One does not often see chess players going at it in public spaces. I asked if they minded me shooting some photos while they played…if it would distract them. Their only request was that I make them “look good”. I did my best.
F/4; 1/80 sec; ISO 400
I like the image’s ability to portray both serious consideration ( hand on chin ) and relaxed contemplation ( man playing black )
The onlooker facing the camera seems to be enjoying it the most since he have no “skin” in the game perhaps.
B&W works very well in removing possible distractions in the background.
Did you consider a higher f-stop to take less focus on the background elements?
Bill, I did not. When I came upon them I had a flash memory of a scene in a movie of chess games happening in a park and I thought what a ‘street shot’ that was. I tried to emulate it. So, I wanted to incorporate the surroundings in the shot. I had initially selected another photo to post. I asked Lidia (spouse) which she preferred and this was the one. I agreed this was a better photo.
to be clear I mean the B&W is the better photo
I agree the B&W is a better composition for sure.
Looking for symmetry and composition in street photography. I saw the opportunity of the pedestrian entering the frame. Waited for a “balance” shot. Post processed in Photoshop with perspective crop to get the symmetry right.
Here is the black and white version
Here is a squaire detail with some dark areas enhanced with the dodge tool
Nice shot. Captured a moment that makes one take a second look. I like the B&W more and the uncropped better then the cropped. The uncropped places the subjects in more context and makes me look at it longer questioning what I am seeing. Did you consider cropping down to the individual sitting on the steps? You may have two photos in one.
Here is the extreme crop. Played around with the B&W color channels and some dodging.
While out with my birding group, we came across an individual’s campsite, under the wildlife bridge of a future ring road in Red Deer. This bridge has been here for about 20 years I was told. What surprised me was the how well it was set up. This was also a first time editing in raw and masking different areas. It was a challenge as lighting was all over the place. Taken with my 300 lens, F5.6, ISO 1600, Exposure 1/160
Original – struggled with the blown-out trees and shadows throughout.
Taken in Dubrovnik

The first is on a pathway while walking the dog. The city put in a water fountain and it was turned on for about 2 weeks the shut off for the season and i noticed someone put a water jug out. I guess this is more of a juxtaposition sorta of a monolith lighting’
This next photo is a scan of a black and white negative of mine. The Ritz Hotel in Saskatoon, back in I would have to say 1975. The building has since been replaced, but I loved the fact that women couldn’t go into the beverage room front door.
Taken with my cell phone.
Taken along the east village river pathway

Took this while in Amsterdam a few years ago. I thought the mirrored cube offered some interest perspective with the red pole dividing the image into two photos. One on the left showing the simple reflection and the other on the right showing what else is going on in the street. 55mm, ISO 100, 1/60@f9. Minor colour saturation in post processing.
Another image of mirrored cube. ISO 100, 100mm, 1/200@f7.1.
Went down to 17th Avenue one evening recently and captured some street scenes.
This fellow was crossing the road in front of me.
Wide open aperture, and high ISO allowed me to get a shot.
Same evening……this group of young people were hanging out. They caught my attention as well as the man who is watching them. I had a certain unease about that.
Because of the dark background my ss speed was very low at 1/100 and my ISO shot up to 5000 while aperture was wide open. It was necessary to raise the exposure in post.
Off to the Demonstration
Sunday on the mall downtown, headed for City Hall and the pro Palestine Demo.
