2026-02-03 Light Airy vs Dark Moody

This challenge fits with the previous challenge about background contrast. This is about creating a “Light Airy” look versus a “Dark Moody” look in your photography. Post one of each on this page. Here are two videos to give you an idea on how to achieve these looks.

Sand dunes in Namibia. Taken a few years ago, but changed this to black and white in the second pictures.

  8. Sue says:

    The black and white version.

Bit of a cheater as these two pictures are taken with my iPhone 15 Pro of paintings this past week at Contemporary Calgary exhibit of work by Erik Olson which ended a week ago. Same exhibit but two completely different representations – the first one one light and airy and the other dark and brooding. This is picture 1 of 2

  12. Howard says:

Picture 2 of 2 – this one has a dark and brooding background but animated with light and colour from a gaslit lamp post with a raven perched on top

Lake Louise ice sculptures – dark and not so moody…
Both taken with a cell phone

Light and Airy – Decanter standing in front of window bathed in reflected light from extensive snow cover on a cloudless day. Shot from below whereby the exterior of the house across the street is reflected at the bottom of the bottle . Treated with Lightroom classic to reduce the blue hue thrown by the sky.
    f/8; 1/125 sec; ISO 500

Dark & Moody – Sunrise over Calgary skyline from Edworthy Dog Park Feb 14/26.
Luck is half the battle in photography (I think). Took grandson for a practical photo ‘sunrise’ lesson and casually, and luckily, decided to pack my own gear. Turned out to be a phenomenal sunrise. Used Lightroom Classic to deepen colour saturation and lighten buildings. F/11; 1/8 sec.; ISO 100 on tripod

  17. Brian says:

This Snowy Egret awkwardly hanging onto a grating alongside a canal in Tempe, Arizona struck me at first as whimsical but then as a good option for light and airy. ISO180 6oomm f/6.3 1/2000.

  18. Brian says:

This sunset, nighttime cityscape of Phoenix from Dobbins lookout on South Mountain provides a good example of dark and moody. ISO640 55mm f/8 2sec on tripod.

  19. Henri says:

Here is my rendition of dark and moody. Taken at night on the ridge at Silver Springs.
