The challenge theme for the two week period from Mar 7 to 21 is Abstract. The objective is to find a scene that have elements that are less recognizable and more of a design pattern. Karen’s abstract snow scene of the last challenge is a good example. Another good one is Judi’s river ice blocks. The object of this exercise is to think about abstraction rather than realism as you compose your image.
Please submit images no larger than 1600 pixels wide or 1050 pixels high.

Tried some ICM with flowers and got a couple of images that are pleasing
I used 2 extension tubes on my 105 mm lens f18 0.5 sec
the contrast and saturation was increased in post processing

While on our nature walk today I found this abstract scene of aspen trunks and shadows. The aspen were on a slope and the sun was striking the slope at a low angle. I used the Photoshop black and white channels to add some drama. Mainly pushed the blue and cyan sliders.

I thought ICM could help me explore attracts.
These trees were covered in hoar frost.
I.S.O. 100, f 22, 1/25 s.

Nothing like sun through the window, blown glass and new camera filters. This was done with my macro lens and HDR art embossed filter. F5, 1/500 sec ISO 500 on black felt.

Thank goodness the snow is finally rotting! It can’t leave soon enough! Taken on my balcony. I wanted to show the sparkles in the sun as well as the wholes of missing snow flakes. AP, FL 400mm, F8, S 1/3200, ISO 200, WB Auto, CW Metering

I also thought I would experiment with ICM, taking this image of a large pot containing artificial plants. Handheld with a quick spin of the 75-300 mm telephoto lens. ISO 100, f/25, 1/13. Light enhancements and sharpening using Apple Photos and GIMP.

I am waiting for my new to me camera to arrive, so I am submitting a photo taken on my IPhone. It is a portion of a pipe that I that I saw over at the mall on my walk to the post office. I cropped the image in Apple photos and tweaked up the black and white.

Debbie’s glass ball made me think of my old childhood marble collection that is still kicking around. This was taken with extension tubes on a tripod with cable release. ISO 100, f/20, 3.2s. Applied strong vignette using Apple Photos.

Beautiful! I’m envious you still have them! We called them alleys. I used to clean up with my controversial “Hit one, get four!” game at recess, because the boys only gave three. Just some of the many things my mother threw out while I was out of the country for two years (including all my Superman comics and Mad magazines).

My grandkids all did a finger painting for me to save. After the picture had dried we would sit and see what we could see in it. This is a photo of one. Taken with my 18 – 55 mm lens at f/3.6, 1/10 sec, ISO 500. Can you see the buffalo?

I took this picture in Bebo Grove in Fish Creek Park. I was shooting grass stalks sticking up through the snow. With some unintentional camera movement, this was the picture that was taken. Usually delete most pictures when this happens but I really liked the colors in this picture so I kept it. Shot with my 70 – 300 lens with 1/4X extender at f/14, 1/200 sec. ISO 500

To obtain this abstract look, I deliberately took an overexposed shot of a log and roots projecting out over the water at Carburn Park. Using post-processing in Apple Photos, I used fairly radical Curve adjustments as well as other adjustments to the black point and vibrance to get this result. I was not only intrigued by the colours this brought out, but also the details it brought out that were not evident in the original shot.

This is the same shot, but post-processed using Affinity Photo (very similar to PhotoShop). This photo has a more “painted” appearance.

I was unhappy with all my outdoor abstract attempts so tried some camera movement shots when I got home.

A last minute addition – backyard tree shot through a glass.

An outdoor shot. Vastly underexposed because I was using all manual settings and it was so bright and sunny I couldn’t see well. But it looks abstract, I thought.
ISO 100, 22 mm, f/22, 1/800, -0.67 ev
(The same scene at the correct exposure is butt ugly. ISO 100, 22 mm, f/6.3, 1/500, 0 ev)
