This challenge theme is about a different perspective. “Looking Up” is not just about looking straight up towards the sky, but also about a low perspective. This could be as simple as a tea cup on the edge of a table while pointing the camera up. Or a portrait from a low perspective. Of course it applies to tall buildings as well. Challenge your creativity!
Please upload images no larger than 1600 pixels wide or 1050 pixels high. These have plenty of resolution for our web site, and keep the site from filling up too fast.
found out about the whooping crane in Springbank , I was lucky to see it flying the second time I was there

Great catch, Della!
thank you , Karen
Last week, Diana and I were in the Bugaboos for a helicopter-hiking and photography workshop. The trip involved a helicopter flight to the Bugaboos backcountry lodge (also the location for winter help-skiing trips).
We were challenged to try some middle of the night Milky Way photography. Here are a couple of my first attempts
Captured with a medium format Fuji GFX50s-ii.
F 3.5. ISO 3200; SS@30 seconds; Focal length of 50mm on tripod.
Wow! Beautiful image. Amazingly clear night.
Right now there are hawks everywhere. This Swainson’s Hawk was just circling overhead south on Hwy 22. Could easily been hunting. Settings: 400mm, F7.1, S 1/3200, ISO 1300, Auto WB, Matrix Metering. Sharpened with Topaz Sharpen AI.
Great shot Karen
Thanks, Henri.
I took a very low perspective “Looking Up” image of some sunflowers in a neighbour’s yard. I had my 14 mm lens almost on the pavement. Used perspective cropping to take the slant out of the image, and then used transform-distort to restore the “squished” background.

Just back from a fabulous tour of Haida Gwaii. Incredible old growth forests, but difficult to capture the true size of the trees. This dead one was along the seashore right in the town of Sandpit and a favourite roosting spot for the ubiquitous eagles. Taken with iPhone.
Thought I would include this shot of my wife sitting in front of a giant sitka spruce to give some sense of the size of the trees in Haida Gwaii. Apologies for breaking the 2 image rule!
Another iPhone shot taken along a forest hiking trail. Both photos sharpened and levels adjusted in GIMP.

Some type of post surrounded by clouds – Rosebud, Alberta. Canon EOS R8 – 1/1250 sec @ f/6.3, 80 mm, ISO 160.
I had such an amazing birding experience today, that I just had to post. Two Turkey Vultures on Woodland Road S off Hwy 1A. I have seen them before but never so close to the city. Focal Length 400 mm, F 7.1, S 1/3200, ISO 1300. Sharpened with Topaz, cropped.
Osprey nest with Mother and chick in Glenmore Athletic Park Taken with 100-400 mm lens with 1.4 extender. Settings f/16, 1/200 sec, ISO 250
Not spending much time looking up. Have a new puppy which means I am always looking down. Taken with a 18-55 mm lens at f/3.6, 1/80 sec, ISO 6400
Looking way up to the top of our house, fully zoomed. I had other shots of this chickadee, but the configuration of the wires made this one the most interesting.
ISO 3200, 400mm, f/11, 1/800 s
This was taken while cycling up 101St. W near the ring road. It is about 11% grade here. I liked how the shoulder white lines and centre line drew my eyes up and off to infinity on the left as the grade decreased with arrow signs to assist . Also, truth be told, it gave me a chance to get my heart rate and breathing back closer to normal.
Here I’m looking up from under the bottom of the magnificent staircase that goes from Sunnyside to Rosedale. It’s always busy with a steady stream of people using it for working out.

At the Okotoks rodeo on Saturday. Looking around to find something “up” or “down” and my eyes caught something shiny. f/2.8, 1/2000 se., ISO 125 at 200 mm
Below sea level is ‘down’, I think? Petty Harbour , Newfoundland about three weeks ago.
