Black and white photography has always been my favourite, when I first started taking pictures I had a small darkroom in my parent’s basement. being the packrat that I am I have kept my negatives from the first roll of film I took with my Nikkormat and developed the negatives.
The first picture is that photo, and the second is the last photo I took in black and white, my new favourite spot when walking the dog.
Really like this composition Dwight. Strong leading line to the crown of the tree.
taken with the Canon sd600 iso 200 f2.8 1000 of a sec.
Went to Heritage Park today for Railroad Days. The railroad venues were packed, so I walked elsewhere and found this detail in one of the “back yards”. I manipulated this in Photoshop to simulate an old sepia colour photograph.
Heritage Park – Early 1900’s costumes – Simulated antique photo – processed in Photoshop B&W adjustment layer, grain, vignette and shadow adjustments with Photoshop Camera Raw filter.
Detail-1
This is my favorite B&W picture. It is of ice flowers taken at a Griffith Woods Pond. I haven’t done anything to the image. It one a red ribbon for B&W Scenic at the recent Springbank Fall Fair.
Hiking yesterday morning into Arnica Lake. On the way we passed by Vista Lake with steam rising off the surface of the water.

I was ‘babysitting’ my son’s cat…
f/3.9, 1/50, iso400
B&W or colour – which is the better?? I think in the case I like the B&W slightly more.
ISO 250, f/29, 1/80.
Here is the colour version.
Amazingly, this makes downtown Calgary look futuristic and interesting.
I also prefer the b/w version of this one
Another example. In this case I think I like the colour version better.
ISO 160, f/32, 1/80.
B&W version
Yes to the colour! I really like all the layers and geometric variety in this shot.
Near Headwall lakes, Kanannaskis

Jasmyn (our cat) sitting on a leather chair looking out the window. Black and white.
This photo is shot with the Nikon F4. Introduced in 1988 the F4 lasted until 1997 as it was supplanted by the F5 in 1996. It is a film camera. It has all sort of bells & whistles we are used seeing in digitals. Shooting film comes with a double focus challenge. One has to both shoot a sharp image with the camera and then again has to focus a sharp image unto the paper with the enlarger. I used to be able to do the latter with the naked eye, now it is a challenge even using a scope. As-shot except for digitizing for electronic transfer.
As comparison, this photo was shot with the D610 (digital) and undergone post-processing. Not quite a one-to-one comparison as the two photos were shot a day apart
Subsequent to our discussion regard posting of photos without model release, I was not suggesting they should not be shot or posted when in appropriate settings. Just wanted to hear what you all thought. To that point, here is one I have shot at the Stampede this past July and wish I had a model release because I am considering submitting it in the 2025 photo contest. But in the off-chance it gets in the top three the Stampede will ask for a model release because those are available for sale.
