2026-06-23 Summer

The photography subject of “Summer” is a really broad one. The objective of this exercise is to capture the essence of what summer is like. In Calgary, Stampede comes to mind with the parade down 9th ave coming up soon. Heritage park is another venue where a lot of summer activity is taking place. I had a look at Tom Ang’s inspirational images through the year and looked at the “Summer” pages for inspiration.
1: Summer is for barbecues, picnics and outdoor food
2: Summer is for visiting beautiful gardens, such as the Zoo’s garden
3: Summer is for Carnivals, such as the Stampede or Heritage Park’s mini carnival
4: Summer is for downtown street performers and street photography
5: Summer is for mountain experiences or hikes in parks
6: Summer is for boating, sailing, fishing or just splashing in water
7: Summer is for various types of biking
8: Summer is for fields with canola and other crops
9: Summer is for pets in action, chasing balls etc
10: Summer is for camping experiences.
The possibilities are many.

For those of you interested in traveling by car in and around southern Alberta. This is an interesting presentation on Alberta Scenic Photography Guide by the Camera Store “Live TV” show and Dale Leckie, with a bit of a geological perspective https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovGX7k6gVQU

Summer is about cruising in a red mustang through the country side. I liked the colour contrasts between the red, green and yellow.

Great concept – would have been even better with the top down! Although June hasn’t been too conducive for that, lol.
I like the first angle best for the scenery, and the second one is best for the car.

I had no luck looking for the Red-headed Woodpecker 🙂

Country road, summer sky. Taken just north of Calgary at the end of Sarcee Trail. Taken with my smartphone. Modified in photoshop to balance land and sky.

I was at the Canada Parade at Heritage Park. Vintage cars, pipe bands and people having fun. These guys in the brass band were riding in the back of an old truck. They were taking a break and enjoying themselves.

Well, I am not sure where my brain was. I swapped the pictures so these were supposed to be in Photo Choice and the others in summer. Oh well, summer brain freeze.

Flamingos at the Calgary Zoo – love the two amorous ones back left, and the guy front right with his head in a barrel, looking disgusted with the PDA. ISO100, 57mm, f/5, 1/100s.

Atlas moths in Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo. One of the world’s largest moths with a wingspan of up to 10 inches, and striking patterns that mimic a snake’s head to deter predators. ISO100, 120mm, f/5.6, 1/100s.

In Calgary, one else one can say ‘summer’ than the Stampede Parade. Somewhat of a failed shot in that in my haste to capture the shot a tree trunk got in the way. But after looking at it on the monitor at home I kind of like that tree trunk.
